The 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gasogeno has earned a reputation for its utilisation of alternative fuel sources and was running strongly this Mille Miglia.
In 1933 Mille Miglia, the car was powered by coal gas. This was basically a big tank on the back of the car, filled with coal dust and set alight, burning in a very low oxygen environment gave a lot of smoke and unburned gasses, this was then piped through particle filters and sent to the engine via a special carburettor or more accurately “mixer”.
Even in that era we needed alternatives to petroleum based fuels, the quality and supplies of conventional fuel couldn’t always be assured, leading to the exploration of alternative options. Hence at the special request of Mussolini a special class was made in the MM. The department of agriculture bought themselves an Alfa Romeo 1750GS Zagato and converted it for the Gasogeno system. This Alfa Romeo ‘Gasogeno’ being the only entrant in that category therefore amazingly won its class.
In 2023, HCS joined forces with P1 Fuels, a provider of sustainable fuel, thereby offering drivers of internal combustion engined vehicles a fresh alternative for their driving needs. Carbon Neutral 98 Octane fuel.
This 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gasogeno will forever be celebrated as the first car to run in the Mille Miglia on alternative fuel in 1933 and now has the great honour of being the first prewar vehicle to participate and finish this esteemed road race while running on fully synthetic sustainable fuel sourced from waste bio mass, leaving a lasting legacy for both the Mille Miglia and the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gasogeno.
Hopefully we can persuade the owner to finish the restoration of this historically important car by having the Gasogeno tanks made as an interchangeable item with the currently fitted rear section of bodywork. Watch this space for more info on P1 fuels and maybe the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gasogeno.
