Detailed Description
AC 16/80 two seater competition sports SWB. Produced on the 28th March 1938 (chassis no L 635). The engine is a two litre straight six with ohc and triple su carburettors. It is one of only fifteen 16/80 sports models built with the sloping tail bodywork, in total only forty two 16/80 competition cars were built. The beautiful flowing lines of the body are the work of Freddie March who later founded Goodwood motor circuit. Famous buyers of the handsome sports model included movie star Errol Flynn and American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
This particular car was the Works’ demonstrator and as such was finished in Snow Shadow Jewelescence on all bodywork, chassis and running gear especially for the Earls Court Motor Show in London. In 1938 GPF 957 was entered in the RAC Rally by JG Pige-Leschallas and co-driver Edgar Kehoe, both well-known and respected rally drivers of the day. Also in 1938 the car was road tested by the Autocar magazine and featured in their July 1938 edition. GPF 957 was to feature again in the Autocar magazine in August 1940 as a subject in the ‘Talking Sports Cars’ series. Continuation log books show owners from the 1950’s and 60’s.
GPF 957 was bought by the previous owner on the 22 February 1997 in poor condition and he restored her over the next nine years. Engine, gearbox and rear axle were fully
rebuilt by AC expert Brian Taylor. A large file of its restoration is available on request including a photographic record of its mechanical rebuild.
