Delage's Legacy

Founded near Paris in 1905 by the visionary Louis Delage, Delage quickly ascended to the ranks of France's premier luxury car manufacturers, rubbing shoulders with illustrious names like Bugatti, Hispano Suiza, and Talbot Lago. Despite its early success, the economic upheaval of 1929 took a toll on the luxury car market. However, Louis Delage refused to surrender. In 1932, the D6-11 emerged, followed by the D8-15 two years later. These models, featuring independent front wheels and innovative engines, couldn't fully counter dwindling sales. On April 20, 1935, Delage entered liquidation and was eventually acquired by Delahaye in a bid to establish itself among the most prestigious car makers. This endeavor ultimately faltered, and the last car bearing the Delage badge rolled off the production line in 1953.

The Parisian Gem

Debuting at the October 1930 Paris Salon, the Delage D6, designed by Maurice Gaultier, boasted a 3045cc OHV engine mated to a four-speed 'Cotal' gearbox. Crafted with precision, the D6 featured a robust ladder frame chassis, all-round leaf spring suspension, and four-wheel drum brakes. Despite its undeniable allure, the D6 found itself overshadowed by its esteemed sibling, to which it bore striking similarities in both price and appeal. Consequently, a mere 1160 D6s are believed to have graced the Parisian streets between 1930 and 1933.

A Resplendent Rebirth

This exquisite D6-70 (1937) model showcases a cabriolet body designed by Henri Chapron and assembled in England by University Coachcraft. Formerly in the possession of a Belgian collector, this vehicle has undergone comprehensive restoration, encompassing its bodywork, interior, and mechanical components. Having spent significant time in the sunny South of France, the car has been a frequent contender in rallies organized by the French Delage club. The engine has received a fresh and expert rebuild by HCS, now standing in peak condition.

A Tourer's Dream

The Delage stands as a testament to all-around quality, making it a splendid addition to any discerning collector's repertoire. In 1930, Delage introduced the D6 model range, with its 6-cylinder engine primarily developed for the brand's luxury cars. This lineage persisted well beyond World War II, enduring until 1953, with engine capacities growing from a 2001cc 6-cylinder to a postwar 3-liter powerhouse, accompanied by increased power output. Delage garnered renown for its magnificent coach-built automobiles, reaching the zenith of opulent luxury with the D8, a 4-liter 8-cylinder masterpiece.
